What Are the California FAIR Plan Home Hardening Discounts?
The program offers three types of discounts based on wildfire mitigation efforts:
1. Immediate Surroundings Protections (Up to 5% Discount)
To earn this discount, homeowners must address defensible space and reduce nearby fire fuels:
- Clear under-deck debris and vegetation
- Remove combustible items within 30 feet of the home
- Maintain defensible space per California PRC 4291 guidelines
- Create a 5-foot ember-resistant zone around the structure

2. Home Hardening Structure Protections (10% Discount)
This discount is awarded for hardening your actual home to block embers, heat, and flames:
- Install a Class A fire-rated roof
- Add noncombustible material at least 6” up from the base of all walls
- Use ember- and fire-resistant vents
- Upgrade to fire-resistant windows
- Enclose all eaves to prevent ember entry
