Wildfire defense mesh is the physical barrier between wind-driven embers and the inside of your home. It covers vent openings, screens eave gaps, protects crawlspace entries, and blocks the tiny burning particles that cause most wildfire home ignitions. If you are hardening your California home against wildfire, mesh selection is one of the first and most important decisions you will make.
What Is Wildfire Defense Mesh?
Wildfire defense mesh is fine-gauge metal screening specifically designed to block burning embers from passing through vent and gap openings on your home. Unlike standard window screen or pest mesh, wildfire defense mesh is made from noncombustible, corrosion-resistant metal with openings small enough to stop embers as small as 1/16 of an inch.
Standard pest screening uses 1/4-inch openings. That is large enough for burning embers to pass through freely. Wildfire defense mesh uses openings of 1/8 inch or smaller, with 1/16 inch providing the maximum level of protection.
Why Mesh Size Matters
The size of mesh openings directly determines what can pass through:

Mesh Materials Compared
The material matters as much as the size. During a wildfire, temperatures near a structure can exceed 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Your mesh must survive that heat.
- 316 Stainless Steel: The gold standard. Melting point over 2,500 degrees F. Excellent corrosion resistance. Will not rust in coastal environments. Costs more but lasts decades.
- 304 Stainless Steel: Very good option. Slightly less corrosion resistance than 316 but significantly cheaper. Adequate for most inland California locations.
- Galvanized Steel: Budget-friendly. Adequate fire resistance but will rust over time, especially in humid or coastal areas. Needs replacement every 5 to 10 years.
- Bronze: Excellent corrosion resistance. Noncombustible. Premium cost. Good for coastal homes where salt air corrodes other metals.
- Aluminum: Lightweight and corrosion resistant but melts at approximately 1,220 degrees F, well within wildfire temperature range. Not recommended for primary ember defense.
- Fiberglass: NEVER use for wildfire protection. Melts at low temperatures. Standard fiberglass window screen is a fire hazard, not a fire defense.
- Plastic: NEVER use. Melts and burns. Zero protection value.
Where to Install Wildfire Defense Mesh
Every opening on your home is a potential ember entry point. Prioritize these locations:
Priority 1: Attic and Roof Vents
Gable vents, ridge vents, and roof vents provide direct access to your attic space, which is filled with combustible materials. These are the highest priority for mesh upgrades.
Priority 2: Soffit and Eave Vents
Often numerous on a single home. Embers collect in eave spaces and enter through soffit vents. Count every one and protect them all.
Priority 3: Foundation and Crawlspace Vents
Ground-level vents are exposed to embers that accumulate at ground level and get pushed by wind. Crawlspaces contain floor joists and other combustible framing.
Priority 4: Other Openings
Dryer vents (use purpose-built ember caps), garage vents, bathroom exhaust vents, and any other opening in the building envelope.

Ember Mesh Screen: Installation Guide
Installing ember mesh screen is one of the most accessible DIY wildfire protection projects:
- Inventory all vents. Walk the entire perimeter. Look up at eaves, down at foundation, and on the roof. Count every vent.
- Measure each opening. Cut mesh 1 inch larger than the opening on all sides for overlap.
- Cut the mesh. Use tin snips or aviation shears. Wear heavy gloves as cut edges are sharp.
- Secure with noncombustible fasteners. Stainless steel screws into the vent frame. Space screws every 2 to 3 inches along edges.
- Eliminate all gaps. Run your finger along every edge. Any gap is an ember pathway. Use fire-rated caulk for small gaps.
- Test airflow. Hold a tissue near the vent. If it moves, air is flowing. If not, you may have over-layered the mesh.
- Photograph everything. Before and after photos for insurance documentation.
Fire Mesh for Vents: Cost Breakdown
Wildfire defense mesh is remarkably affordable compared to other home hardening upgrades:
- 1/16-inch 304 stainless steel mesh (per square foot): $3 to $8
- 1/16-inch 316 stainless steel mesh (per square foot): $6 to $15
- Galvanized steel mesh (per square foot): $1 to $4
- Bronze mesh (per square foot): $8 to $20
- Noncombustible fasteners (box of 100): $5 to $15
A typical California home needs 15 to 25 square feet of mesh to cover all vents. Total material cost: $50 to $200 for a DIY project that provides one of the highest levels of wildfire protection per dollar spent.
Professional vs DIY: When to Call an Expert
DIY mesh installation works well for ground-level foundation vents, accessible gable vents, and single-story eave vents. Call a professional when:
- You need to access steep rooflines or multi-story eaves
- Your home has complex architectural features with hidden vents
- You want full vent replacement with intumescent products
- Mechanical vents (dryers, HVAC) need specialized caps
- You need formal documentation for insurance compliance
How Wildfire Defense Mesh Fits Into Home Hardening
Mesh is one component of a layered home hardening strategy. It works alongside:
- Zone 0 compliance: Noncombustible materials within 5 feet of the home
- Eave and soffit enclosure: Closing open eaves with fiber cement or metal
