Your fence may be the single biggest wildfire vulnerability you have never thought about. A standard 6-foot wood fence attached to your home is essentially a fuse that carries fire directly from your property line to your structure.
Why Wood Fences Are So Dangerous
- Direct connection to the home. Most wood fences attach directly to the house. Fire traveling along the fence reaches the structure in minutes.
- Continuous fuel. A 50-foot fence is 50 feet of unbroken combustible material.
- Ember catchers. Fence joints catch and hold embers.
- Zone 0 violation. Wood fencing within 5 feet of your home violates AB 3074.

Fire-Resistant Fencing Options
Metal Fencing
Steel, wrought iron, aluminum. Completely noncombustible. Cost: $25 to $75 per linear foot installed.
Masonry and Block
Concrete block, stone, stucco over block. The gold standard. Noncombustible plus radiant heat shielding. Cost: $40 to $100+ per linear foot.
Composite Fencing
Better than wood but NOT noncombustible. Check the specific product fire rating. Cost: $20 to $50 per linear foot.
Vinyl Fencing
Not recommended for fire zones. Melts at low temperatures.
Wood with Fire Retardant
Interim measure only. Slows ignition but does not make wood noncombustible. Needs seasonal reapplication.
The 5-Foot Rule: Zone 0 and Fencing
Under AB 3074, Zone 0 requires noncombustible materials within 5 feet of the home. Any wood fence attaching directly to your house violates Zone 0. At minimum, replace the first 5 feet with metal or masonry.
The Noncombustible Fence Break
The most cost-effective improvement: replace just the first 5 to 6 feet of wood fence where it connects to the house with a metal gate or panel. Cost: $200 to $800. This breaks the fire pathway without replacing the entire fence.
Fence Maintenance for Fire Season
- Clear vegetation growing on or against the fence
- Remove leaves, needles, and debris at the fence base
- Trim plants and vines on the fence
- Store combustibles away from the fence line
- Inspect the fence-to-house connection
